JOB CONTEXT
ULAB is seeking to appoint a passionate, driven, and innovative individual who will entrench the Media Studies and Journalism Department’s leadership position in the country. S/he shall lead and design a modern, flexible, and practice-oriented curriculum for the department; utilizing digital resources reflective of industry standards and the demands of learners. The Head will work in partnership with other offices/centers/departments within the university on a variety of strategic initiatives to support the university’s mission, values, and goals.
REPORTING
The Head of MSJ Department will report to the Dean of School of Social Science.
MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the designing, developing, implementing, and reviewing of hybrid and OBE (Outcome Based Education) focused curriculum as well as to expand to continuing education courses.
- Supervise the preparation of SAR (Self-Assessment Report) for the purpose of accreditation; supervise required documentation for purposes of rating and certification.
- Ensure smooth running of the MSJ department including monitoring the quality of faculty members and classes, planning for faculty and course composition per term, creating a sound co-curricular and extra-curricular environment to foster student learning and participation, on-time course completion & assessment, and prohibiting any unethical practice etc.
- Give emphasis on the creative development of the students so that they can make successful and sustainable footprints in the related sector.
- Focus on the development and performance assessment of the faculty members.
- Demonstrate the department’s thought leadership in Bangladesh and South Asia through conferences, public lectures, roundtable discussions and public dialogues with various stakeholders.
- Keep liaison with key people inside and outside ULAB to support on time faculty recruitment, knowledge sharing and to attain departmental goals and KPIs.
- Understand and align the departmental operations with ULAB’s Strategic Plan
- Ensure a research culture in the department by undertaking research mentoring activities (encouraging the faculty and graduate/senior students), applying and implementing research grants and producing quality publications of the department.
- Build a strong network with related industries, educators’ and professional associations, and universities

QUALIFICATIONS
- EDUCATION
The candidate must have an offline PhD in Media Studies and Journalism, Mass Communication or related discipline from an internationally reputed university.
- EXPERIENCE
Minimum 12 years of teaching, research, and administrative experience. This bar may be relaxed for the exceptional candidates having good quality foreign degrees.
- RESEARCH
Minimum 12 publications in good quality international, peer-reviewed journals. Scopus-indexed (or equivalent) journals will be preferred. Books/book chapters by renowned publishers with international co-authors, and demonstrated ability to obtain research funding will be additional qualifications.
- SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, presentation, people, management and communication skills. Adept in using digital tools for work, presentation, and communication.
- LEADERSHIP
3 to 5 years of experience in a departmental leadership position in a university or higher education organsiation is preferred. The ideal candidate should have the ability to lead the MSJ department focusing on understanding team members, team building, motivation, conflict resolution and timely decision making.
- INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
Applicants with relevant experience in industry and consultancy will be preferred.
- AGE
Preferably under 60 years; but may be relaxed for deserving candidates.
